wear it because you love it.

Welcome to Monday and week 2 of the self-love revolution. If you're just joining us, be sure to read back on the previous posts to see just what in the devil this hullabaloo is all about.

Today marks the start of my second challenge for all of you. Are you ready for this? BAM!

That's right--I've been watching A LOT of RuPaul's Drag Race. WORK! This week, I'm challenging you to wear that crazy vintage dress you've been dying to wear but haven't had the courage to try. Get out the bright colors, the red lipstick, the tall shoes, whatever it is you've been scared of, AND WEAR IT. IN PUBLIC!

My BIGGEST pet peeve quite possibly in the universe is the phrase "I can't pull that off." I got news for you, honey. Not only can you "pull it off," you can feel good doing it. If YOU feel good in it and if YOU love it, that's all that matters.

Think for just a split second about why you've been afraid to wear that bold outfit. I'm willing to bet it's because you're scared of what people think, right? So, what if for another split second you just thought--who cares? What's the worse thing that can happen? They think you look funny? Well fine--you don't want to be their friend anyway because who cares what you wear. If they care, then maybe they should rethink their priorities because it's NOT a big deal.

To kick off the challenge, here's my silly outfit. Bright colors, a thrifted vest, blue tights, and crazy cowboy boots. Yeah, it's crazy, yeah it's a little loud, and I don't care.

There. I'll be the first one to wear the crazy outfit so that you don't feel alone in doing it. I'll have another one for you later this week for Thrifty Thursday, so stay tuned.

Now go! Get that bright floral dress out and work it. It works if you work it. And leave a link if you post about doing it! I'd love to see it. GOOD LUCK! And just have fun with it.

I'm so beep-ing envious of your incredible cowboy boots! Who makes cowboy boots with ACTUAL INDIANS on them?! Nutty! Amazingly so! I love this outfit and I am so the girl everyone's staring at wearing the weird stuff. But lately... not so much. Guess why? Because I haven't been feeling great about my body, yup, stupid reason, huh? Thanks for helping to remind me that I need to stay true to the expressive-dresser in me!

  3. Meghan says:

You look fab! but can we talk about those boots for a minute? I am so envious of you! I don't even own a pair of cowboy boots (tear) let alone a butter cream yellow pair with scalloped edged and Indians on them. Best thrift ever? I say yes!

  4. Rachel marie says:

oh, yeah! I love this challenge, and cannot wait to take you up on it!

  5. Oh my, those boots! My cowboy boots are red, it took me ages to find them, and on a good day, they make me feel indestructible. On a bad day they make me feel like a gnome, but I'll wear them anyway and just keep telling myself that all those people who give me funny sideways glance are just jealous because they are not brave enough to wear red cowboy boots :)

  6. liefgeval says:

You look aaamaaazing! Oh my those boots! Love love love!

  7. Barbara says:

hahaha, ru paul's drag race is awesome!!! i've actually been afraid to wear colored tights. its crazy because they're so popular! i need to go out and buy me the brightest color i can and work it!

  8. Zane says:

I'm doing this tomorrow :) Xoxo

  10. Caroline says:

Yay, you look great! I have a couple of those sneaky dresses in my wardrobe. Thanks for the inspiring thoughts x

  11. Rebecca Jean says:

I think you picked a bad example, because I can't find one thing crazy about this outfit. Other than it's CA-RAZY cool! I love every bit of it and the attitude you're serving up with it.

Since I pretty much already wear whatever the hell I want without worrying about what other people think, it will be hard to accept this challenge. Although Friday I did wear this dress I've been holding on to for a while now. It's a fun, purple, retro frock with black bats all over it. I paired it with black flats with spiked bows on the toes and a little leather jacket. Wore it to a show at our local performing arts center amidst all the blue hairs from town. They kept asking if I was part of the show. Ha! What a night.

  12. Larissa says:

I love your loud outfit! I need to find some courage and some crazy fun clothes.

  13. Amanda says:

Those cowboy boots are the best. You look great!

  14. Autumn says:

  16. You look fantastic!

Every time I get a new vintage dress I feel a little bit scared to wear it to my work... and every time I do I get nothing but compliments all day. I'm all for being brave with your clothes!

  17. Amen to that! Wearing something happier is bound to make one happier too. And wow, those boots! Fabulous!

  18. carly says:

i get that "i could never pull that off" ALL THE TIME!! and i always ask the same question "WHY THE HECK NOT?" it makes me so angry so i'm happy to see this post!! even though i'm definitely an advocate of "of course you can wear it!" i definitely have outfits and bright clothes that i don't wear all the time...not because i care what people think of me, but because i feel like it's not 'me' but guess what? if i want it to be me and I'M wearing it and rocking it, then it's me! you're totally right!!

also, you look adorable. of course.

  19. Andrea says:

I LOVE the outfit - you can never be too loud :) Plus, those boots might be the best thrift score evah!

  20. Sarah says:

lol that is my biggest pet peeve too. you look super cute btw.

  21. Kristina says:

Love, love, love the print on your dress! Too awesome! =)

  22. Loren says:

Those boots are crazy awesome. I always feel weird when a friend tells me they couldn't 'pull my look off'. I think that a large part of it is just having the confidence to walk outfit feeling like you look awesome. And you do.

  23. Heather says:

I love this little self-love series :) You're so adorable and inspirational!

I love the cabinet that your records are in, where'd you get it?

  25. jess says:

I love this post and I love the dress. That print is amazing :)

  26. Becky says:

I have so many cute things I've collected over the years that I wish I could wear every day, but my challenge is that I am student teaching this year and have to dress up way more than a cute short vintage dress would allow. By the weekend I'm so sick of slacks and sweaters than jeans and tanks are my go-to! I can't wait for summer when I can let my true colors show!

  27. Sammantha says:

I have nothing else to say except for the fact that i love everything about this post

  28. beca says:

Firstly, can I just say that you are incredible. And I get super giddy and happy seeing you wearing your glasses!
Secondly, I struggle with this a lot. I have a closet full of clothes, and I won't wear half of them. I live in the smallest town in the world now, and the attire of the community is camo, camo and more camo. Oh, and rain boots. So, honestly, I don't know what's stopping me from dressing however I want, it's not like I have anyone to impress, besides feeling good for myself. Thanks for this, I'm going to give it a shot more!

I loved wearing unusual things before I had a kid then (for some crazy reason) felt I couldn't as a mom. I think I was brainwashed or something. Luckily I've recently started to revert to my old ways (thanks to bloggers like yourself) and have loved every second of it. Here is my most recent unique piece: http://prairiehen.blogspot.com/2012/01/outfit-pos...

  30. You look amazing! I am definitely feeling inspired to pull something crazy out of the back of my closet. ;)

  31. shinypigeon says:

I blogged about something VERY similar yesterday! :D

  32. Alexis says:

    In love with these photos.

  33. suzannebrandsen says:

This was just the motivation I needed to say YES to the crazy outfit I've been scared to wear. Now I just need some motivation to leave the house wearing it.

  34. Amber says:

You are such a doll! AND Those boots?!?!
    Perfect.

  35. tanya says:

First - those boots are incredible! I would die if I found those at a thrift shop!

Second - I agree with your whole post. Up until about a year ago, I played it very "safe" with my clothing. I basically lived in jeans/t-shirts. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but I always wanted to go outside my comfort zone and being an extremely introverted person, that was quite scary. Slowly I started wearing more and more clothing that I just wanted to wear and you know what? I never received more compliments on my outfit choices than when I started wearing stuff because *I* loved it! I think the key is confidence. If you're confident, then it doesn't matter what you're wearing!

  36. Jess Lonett says:

this is totally the way i approach getting dressed! i get loads of compliments from friends that totally say "i couldn't pull that off!" and i tell them the same thing! if you have confidence anything will look good on you! yay!

  37. amy, those boots! i lost breath! they. are. amazing.

  39. Just saw this, and LOVE this series! Actually, my most recent outfit post (http://katealamode.wordpress.com/2012/02/09/pushing-boundaries/) totally fits this theme. Long story short: I'm curvy, I'm afraid of body-con/pencil skirts, and I faced my fear.

Your outfit is awesome. I particularly love the bow in your hair!

    Cheers!

Love this post! It really hit home! It inspired me to step out in a new dress I bought on Etsy that I hadn't mustered the nerve to wear out in public yet...

Love your outfit, by the way! The dress...the boots...and the hair bow just tops it all off like icing on the cake! :)
