The easiest, most ridiculous DIY possibly ever

Today's $5 Thrifty Thursday is a little treat. A DIY treat, if you will. And it just so happens to be THE easiest DIY possibly ever as well as one that I wish I would have thought of years ago.

1

Yes indeed! Perhaps you've already thought of this one, but it barely occurred to me the other day whilst thrifting. Why pay $10+ to warm up your furry counterpart when you can spend $5 or less? How? It's as easy as thrifting a toddler sweatshirt.

Yes! As I was searching for vintage baby clothes for my soon-to-arrive niece (yay, Abi!) I came across this awesome blue sweatshirt for $0.99. And then it hit me--ROYAL NEEDS THIS.

So, all you need is a nice toddler sweatshirt or sweater, some scissors, and your cat/dog.

2

Cut the sleeves to desired length, and you've got yourself a $0.99 cat sweater. You could definitely sew the sleeves to fit better and not be jagged, but Royal isn't picky. He's all about comfort.

Pagoda tried to act like he was too cool for it, but really deep down in his heart he was green with envy.

So, now you know just how crazy of a cat lady I really am. I guess it never really was a secret, but at least you now know to what degree my cat ladydom has reached. Judge me as you see fit.

If you make a thrifted pet sweater, send me the link! I'd love to see it. Happy pet sweater thrifting!

    This is awesome! Love it!

  2. larissa says:

That is so so cute! I may have to do this since my cat hate wearing stuff so does the dog. But he's the easiest to put clothes on so I will do it to him. :)

  3. I promise you that I will so this to my own cats some day! Yes, CatS - can't have just one, that wouldn't be crazy enough.

  4. lisa says:

So awesome! I would probably be dead if I tried to put this on my cats though. Best I can do is a tie because they like being businessy...

  5. Averie says:

    GENIUS!!!

My dog loooooves her gear, so I am absolutely going to have to try this out.

  6. Jenna says:

Hahaha...Love it! I'm assuming Royal didn't kill you as anticipated...mine would without a doubt riot against me. (But that isn't going to stop me from hitting up the baby section next time I go thrifting)

  7. Lori says:

This is brilliant. My cats really will murder me in my sleep if I try to dress them but I am totally going to do this for my doggy! Great idea! XO

  8. Stephanie says:

Such a great idea! My cat would never trust me again if I tried to put clothes on him, but I admire your creativity

  9. shutterbug says:

well, i suppose it can be ridiculous for a cat to wear a sweater indoors, where it's nice and warm. But during the fall and winter months, wearing pet sweaters outdoors keeps your pets warm.

  10. Liz says:

    Hahahha amazing & adorable.

  11. citybirds says:

this was hilarious! rosie would scratch my eyes out if i even attempted to put a sweater on her but i have dreamed...i would love for her to walk around the house in a tie!

Oh my gosh, thank you so much for this! I've been looking all over for a sweater for my puppy for winter, now I know how to just make one, I'm not sure I would've thought of it, yay! :)

hahaha you are wonderful. i bought my cat a little halloween jacket and she absolutely HATED it so i loved that 'he actually might kill me tonight' caption cause that's exactly what i was thinking!! he looks SUPER cute though!! mikey's old golden retriever used to wear t-shirts all the time, so cute. she actually loved it though!

  15. allison says:

i was just talking about this with someone else. i was at a thrift store looking at baby tshirts for my dog and the lady next to me was like "oh that shirt is so cute! how old is your little girl?" and I was like "uhh 8 months" Mimi is 8 months, I just failed to mention she was a dog haha. Love the DIY tutorial, I'll have to try this!

  16. Heidi says:

I'm totally doing this. I came up with a good way to turn the sleeve of a T-shirt into a kitty tee without any sewing: http://oliveobserver.blogspot.com/2011/10/last-mi...

  17. courtney says:

once i cut the sleeves off an old t-shirt and used it as a dog scarf. i took a picture and blogged about it. i am quite sure some people thought it was crazy.

  18. thank you so much for making me giggle.

so i bought a toddler t-shirt for $2 at goodwill & turned it into a dino costume for my doggy.

basically cut the sleeves off, took one sleeve and used it as a hat. added felt spikes and circles. voila dino costume. photo here at the bottom of the post: http://rougeandwhimsy.blogspot.com/2011/10/farewe...

  19. ahollandetc says:

    pets are the best.

  21. kate says:

Looks fantastic. Now to cure Fraser's cat allergies, get a kitten, and get thrifting!

  22. Peaches says:

Yeah. My kitty has been subjected to a baby costume or two. Or ten. Oh hell, let's be honest, Id dress her in diapers if she let me!

A Christmas sweater is the next frontier!

  23. Caroline says:

This made me smile so hard! Ooooh golly the things we do for our pets/the things they put up with. You wouldn't believe some of the outfits I've forced on Owen. Lucky for him he's almost a perfect child's size XL - XXL depending on the item.
