a kinda sorta year in review

I've probably gone back and forth on doing a year-in-review post about a bajillion times. Do I really want to look back on a less than banner year? And who else finds compiling a bunch of posts from the year fairly and/or entirely daunting?

But the bottom line is, it's so easy to see the less-than-pretty parts and forget about the simple good parts that got me all the way through to December 30. Am I right? So in my attempt to put a simple spin on year-in-review posts, I think I'll just nicely package my year into a couple of categories. Mitchell and I have been "naming" 2011 lately, so here's what we came up with.

2011: The year of the cats

This category may also be called "2011: cat-lady transformation complete." I also name this category first because (obviously) it's the most important. We not only got a second cat fondly called Pagoda, but my wardrobe suddenly found itself packed full of cat items--dresses, sweaters,  rings, necklaces--you name it. Cat figurines suddenly littered every shelf in my home, and here I am today feeling entirely heartbroken that my 2011 Cat Naps calendar is done and over with.

I have no shame. Cat lady for life.

2011: The year of the hair

This was Mitchell's contribution to the 2011 naming scheme. In 2011 we both grew looooong hair and, consequently, fished plenty of hair gunk out of the drain on a regular basis. Ladies, are you feeling me on this one? So awful.

But alas, we parted with Mitchell's sweet flowy mane in November. RIP, long hair. You will forever remain in my 70s-loving heart.

2011: The year of the trips

You might say 2011 was the year we went crazy, said to hell with it all, and went on multiple trips. What's life without a vacation to look forward to?

While Oregon was lovely, and Disneyworld was sticky and crowded, the highlight of the year was easily the Westy meetup.

Syncro Solstice94

(That last one is one last lamentation about the year of the hair. See? I really do miss it.)

2011: The year of the awkward outfit posts

This year was the year I ventured out into the world awkwardly with my tripod to face my worst fear--pictures of myself. I'd never done outfit posts until 2011 coaxed me into it, and here I am today, still taking awkward pictures with my tripod and loving you all for not making fun of me for it. The year's entire spectrum of outfit posts can be viewed here and individual posts here, although you can only click that link if you promise to go easy on me.

2011: The year of the hoarder

While I've loved thrifting since high school, I do believe that my thrifting addiction reached all new highs this year. Over the summer I found myself in Savers more often than I found myself at home or work, which might be an exaggeration, but maybe not. I started my $5 Thrifty Thursday series and had pretty much the time of my life compiling those posts and seeing all of your glorious thrifty treasures.

Because it was the year of the hoarder, I guess I better list my best-of-2011 thrifting score. There were A LOT, but this one really takes the cake.

The $10 1962 Record Cabinet

My $10 record cabinet! You can read about that baby right here.

2011: The year of the blog

Last but not least, I think that the biggest descriptor of 2011 is the year of the blog. While I've had my blog for 2ish years now, I only got serious about it this February. The people I have met along the way and everything that I've learned about myself make this little blog right here my favorite part of 2011. Well, that and Pagoda, but you know.

As cheesy as it is, and as overused as it may be, I genuinely wanted to thank every SINGLE reader reading this right now or anyone that's read my blog at all this year. Your comments and friendship on Twitter and whatnot have meant absolutely everything, and because of you I continue to run this little blog and fill it with silly things. I've learned a lot this year about blogging, but I'm still completely new at it, so thank you so very, very much for sticking with me and making this so worthwhile.

Happy new year to you all! I wish you all of the very best in 2012 and that we can give it even better names come this time next year.

lates, 2010

I'm not one for resolutions. In fact, I loathe them. Why should some lame change in the man-made calendar year cause me to drastically rethink life and make a goal I can't possibly keep? Just sayin. It's failure and a total bummer waiting to happen.

That being said, there IS something to be said for how much can happen/change you in a year's time. Man-made or not.

2010 wasn't exactly stellar, but it had its ups and downs just like most things in life. You can't win them all, but you can enjoy the 20/20 vision of hindsight. So, I figured I'd look back at 2k10 for a brief moment in this blogosphere space to see what exactly I learned this year.

I experienced being laid off and lived to tell about it.

I realized that nothing is more heart wrenching than being a kitty hospice. RIP Penny Lane. You are missed.

Later I learned that there are more ways to define success in life than careers. Like hanging with your nephews and remembering what it's like to be stoked about everything.

I discovered that my heart belongs to three main loves of my life:

I found out that it's true--you really can love your job.

I reunited with two of my most favorite people in the world and lived to tell about the most magical summer in Morby history. There was music, music, and more music. And then more magic. And music. Lesson learned? Nothing makes me happier than music. Of course,  I already know that, but it never hurts to be reminded.

And speaking of music, I sort of realized that music has meant more to me this year than any other year. Namely,

and

Weird. I didn't think it was possible to really love music any more than I already did. But then again, 2010 is a scamp. Always full of surprises, that 2010.

I learned that yes, it is possible to make a lifelong dream actually come true.

And that happiness can mainly be found in a Westy on the road to LA to see Belle & Sebastian.

or Bear Lake...

or anywhere really.

I learned that it's ok to welcome several new addictions into your life as long as they bring nothing but unadulterated joy.

And lastly, I gave my heart to a white furry maniac of a fluff ball and learned that it's not an exaggeration to say I love an animal more than most things in life.

It's been real, 2010.

Here's to hoping 2011 brings more adventures in sewing, Royal shenanigans, music, and more Westy trips than we can handle.

Longest post of your life.

Happy new year! Don't set too many resolutions. Just remember to live it up. That's what it's all about anyway.

take your resolutions and shove 'em

Sorry. I know you're all sick of year in review blogs, but what if I wanted to do one? I'll be fast I swear.

I was sitting there thinking that 2009 was a total and utter waste, but then I realized I was pooping on the proverbial pity pot. 2009 wasn't all that bad.

We partied hard in Oregon...

We partied even harder in Seattle...

We both turned 22 and grew shaggy nappy nap hair...

We went to Boise to celebrate a joyous union...

and fancy that, we celebrated a year of marriage on a boat. nothing says love like stingrays and nautical antics.

We were Team Zissou for Halloweiner...

And we ventured to AZ for a delightful Thanksgiving with the Morby fam...

The best part of 2009? Mitch's crowning achievement of hair atop his head. Congratulate him sometime. It's absolutely amazing.

Madly in luff with this boy.

Fine. 2009 wasn't half bad.

As for 2010? We'll just have to see. Resolutions are pointless, so you should stop making them. Especially weight loss ones. But if I HAD to come up with one, I'd say we'll be in a house by January 2011--Dave Ramsey style. If you don't know who Dave Ramsey is, then you should. Google it.

Maybe I'll learn how to sew this year. Or actually use my Nikon.

Babies? pa ha. That's a funny joke. No thank you.

Happy new year.
