I'm a voracious thrifter, music aficionado, heathen, and owner of a 1984 Westfalia Vanagon. I'm a writer and a designer, but mostly just a secret cat lady. Vanagon Champion is about all of these things with a little bit of thrifty goodness and old-fashioned magic for good measure. Learn more about me here.

Do you ever get really sick of coming up with blog titles? I do. Sometimes they turn into atrocities like the one you see above.
So Miss Teacups and Bubble Baths posted these ABCs the other day, and I pirated it straight off her blog. I'm sneaky like that.

Age: 24. But sometimes I think my love of werthers originals says otherwise.
Bed size: Queen. This is a weird question.
Chore that you hate: I will take....all of them. But cleaning bathrooms gives me weird feelilngs.
Dogs: Just a cat. But he plays fetch and has awful breath. Close enough.
Essential start to your day: My enormous headphones, tuneage, oatmeal.
Favorite color: Currently teal, although I feel a change to mint afoot.
Gold or Silver: Always, always gold.
Height: 5'5"
Instruments you play: Violin and guitar.
Job title: Graphic designer. I dabble.
Kids: After 5 nephews...never. Jk. but seriously...
Live: Utah. It's not as bad as you think. At least in Salt Lake City.
Mother's name: Pam
Nicknames: Sore subject because I never had one. Except Morbtex. Which is awesome.
Overnight hospital stays: umm...yes. And it blew. 'Nuff said.
Pet peeve: People who don't recognize the moral responsibility of being the first one in a left-turning lane with a green arrow.
Quote from a movie: Pass. Too hard.
Right or left handed: Right
Siblings: April, Ryan, Jill.
Time you wake up: 6:00am, and I don't want to talk about it. Preferred time? Noon.
Underwear: yes please.
Vegetable you hate: Cauliflower. If I liked to eat dirt I'd eat dirt.
What makes you run late: The worst hair in America.
X-Rays you've had: None. But I did get a bone density scan once.
Yummy food that you make: I fail at womanhood and don't cook. But I tell you what--Mitchell makes a mean fried egg sandwich.
Zoo animal: Sea lions 4 life.
You like? Steal it! It's fun!

for the mother
Happy Mother's Day to you all you cute mamas out there. While I'm just a mother to a beautiful baby cat at this point, I'm surrounded my tremendous moms who keep it real and make it happen.
Like my mom. She's the undisputed queen of selflessness and the influence of all things good in my life. She's a grandma to 5 (soon to be 6!) and the amount of energy and generosity that comes out of this lady is crazy.
Thanks for teaching me to speak up and encouraging me to do whatever I wanted. Even if it was dye my hair crazy colors in high school or wear nothing but thrifted clothing now. You raised me right, ma.
Happy Mother's Day!

e-Waste is for suckers and how I spent my weekend.
For those of you new to A is for Ampersand, I work at an Apple reseller called Simply Mac. We have been working diligently since last summer on planning a massive e-Waste Recycle Event that's free and open to the general public. Thankfully, after several months of crazy hard work, the event went down this weekend and was a huge success!

We held an institutional day for businesses, schools, government, etc. on Friday as well as a public day on Saturday where anyone and everyone could bring their e-Waste down to be recycled for free.
The amount of old technology being recycle Friday and Saturday was pretty insane. To think that all of this would have gone to landfills was staggering. Recycle your e-Waste, kids!

We had to brave the snow (yes--SNOW on April 29 & 30. If you ever thought you hated where you lived, well, you haven't lived in Utah) to pass out free window stickers, magnets, and coupons to everyone who came and recycled.
At the end of both days we had collected just over 500,000 POUNDS of e-Waste. What the?! It's true! Pretty wild. All of that will be 100% recycled, shredded into a bajillion confetti-sized pieces, and used to make new electronics. It all stays in North America and none will be shipped overseas.
I put together a little video of all the clips so we could remember how crayzay it all was. And there's a little slow-mo surprise at about 2:09 if you're interested.
All I know is I was pretty pumped to be a part of that. I hate to say that I might tune out recycling messages since I hear them so often, but this was a big eye opener. Recycle your stuff, everyone! Especially e-Waste. We put an e-Waste footprint calculator on our recycle website, so go check it out and see how much you can do by recycling your e-Waste!
