anyway, we’ll just end this epic failure with a little tilly and the wall.

they’re one of my favorite bands of all time. ever. forever and always. we’ve been through some good and bad times, me and tilly. i’ve loved them since my wild days in hike school, and i still love them with the fervor i did the first time i saw them live at the glass house in CA.

it’s been about…2 years since their last album. it pains me. greatly.

they were on sesame street once…

anyway, they’re splendiferous. maybe they’ll read this post and be inspired by my undying love and adoration and write another album because of it dedicated just to me.

one of the best parts about driving in connie is that every time i get in the car, this song is playing on oldies 94.1. not even joking. every.single.time. without fail. like clockwork.

those doobie brothers. they’re so soulful.

and this is a wee bit on the long side, but absolutely breathtaking. if you get a chance, i highly recommend watching the whole thing. or at least skip to the end when they sing acoustically in a crazy old dome thing. brilliant.

but this one will forever be my favorite:

sea change is a stroke of genius. i’ve yet to find an album as brilliantly mellow yet startlingly impactful. (i’m being told impactful isn’t a word, but it fits here, so whatever.)

i love beck because white rhyming never sounded so phat. but then he can break it down too. kudos to you, sir beck.

a couple of my favs:

beck is one of those artists that i will love no matter what direction he takes. when they’ve been with you since you were 12, that kinda just happens.

this is one of my favs, although there are too many favs to count. this was just one of the only favs with an official music video.

i saw them once at the hollywood bowl. they played with the la philharmonic. my life has never been the same since. that’s probably a gross understatement.

they are the quintessential springtime band of sheer happiness. believe me when i tell you that bad feelings are nonexistent when you’re listening to b&s. i would know–most walks around the USU campus involved Mr. Murdoch and his joie de vivre. and walks around that frigid campus at 7:30 am are NEVER pleasant. that is unless you’ve got b&s on the pod.

wolfmother.

you may know them from such awesome songs as “woman,” but if you haven’t listened to cosmic egg yet, then you best be getting to it. also, if you love led zeppelin, black sabbath, or good music at all, you’ll love wolfmother. i guarantee it. kinda like the guy on the men’s warehouse commercials. but i don’t look as dashing when i say it.

i may or may not have a huge celeb crush on the lead singer. i shook his hand at the show in november. he signed my setlist. it was magical. see below:

if you’re smart, you’re already fully aware of the overly grim music scene. between hearty helpings of gangsta rap, cookie cutter “rock bands,” and lady gaga (dude. not hatin’ or anything. she’s seriously my guilty pleasure. just sayin…) america’s youth is doomed to a travesty of a life filled with musical misguidance.

not so anymore, sucka punches. there’s plenty of stellar music to go around–you just have to look in the right places… i.e., here.

as we embark upon this road to musical enlightenment, we’ll start at the beginning. our roots.

today’s music you should know:

mod podged on many of my notebooks in middle school, the who held my hand in my fledgling years of rock and/or roll discovery. they drove me to guitar lessons every tuesday in pop’s jeep. they treated me oh so well.

the most influential moment the who gave to me? roger daltrey’s completely unparalleled scream in “won’t get fooled again.” pretty sure nothing even comes close to touching that moment. yeah baby. every time i hear it, i want to sell all my possessions, time warp back to 1971, and sell my soul to pete townshend. also, it’s frequently listed as one of the best rock and roll screams of all time. i like to think it’s premium.

additionally, this album is epic and, like the scream, will never get close to being touched:

this album essentially shaped my dad and i’s relationship. it was a common thread he and i shared–a rare thing amongst teenagers and their fathers–and some of the best afternoons of my life were spent listening to “pinball wizard.” (later in life, the best evenings of my life were spent with my older and wiser pops on rockband vocals, singing like he’s never sung before to “pinball wizard.” you prolly haven’t lived until you’ve seen michael perform this for you. next time you see him, ask him about it.)

well, there you have it. whether you listen to them or not, at least know that they were/are, and they rocked it. brilliantly. and thank you to my awesome dad for letting me in on the best rock not-so-secret around. i know i’ve said it before, but it deserves saying again–you raised me right, pops.
